Recent Accomplishments
Analyzed patent landscape for startup company. Identified and
reviewed 1600 patents; developed technology hierarchy and grouped patents
within the hierarchy to identify important patents; developed software
for client to navigate the patent landscape interactively. Result: Client targeted R&D
towards areas of technical expertise that overlapped areas in which
strong patents could be obtained.
Evaluated ten patents for startup company. Reviewed 1500 patents
to place patents in context and find prior art. Recommended that company change the method of
selecting which inventions are patented. Result: Increased patent
portfolio value without increasing patent budget.
Developed a market-centric patent strategy for a $1.8B
semiconductor company to align a 6000
patent portfolio with business goals. Created a hierarchical patent
management system with 17 technical experts, allocated patent budgets for
each product family, reviewed invention disclosures for inventions with
strategic value and identified patent portfolio gaps.
Evaluated foreign patents and recommended patents that could be
abandoned with minor impact on the patent portfolio. Result: Preserved
patent portfolio value while dramatically reducing patent maintenance
fees.
Initiated a
program of offensive patent litigation to protect product profits and
increase licensing revenues. Started and managed two patent infringement
lawsuits. Result: Protected $30M in annual revenue for a $170M product
line.
Acquired six patents to
enhance portfolio. Result: Company received a multi-million dollar
settlement for a patent infringement lawsuit as well as a license to a
competitor’s patent portfolio; saved $2M in remaining lawsuit
costs.
Convinced Taiwanese competitor to become a partner and secondary sales channel for Avago.
New partner stopped selling infringing products and resold Avago chips
under their brand name. Result: Received three times the profit as would
have been received from patent licensing and prevented a $4M patent
lawsuit.
Licensed key patents for a $220M product line. Result: Saved $6M
initial payment and $500K annual royalties.
Sold unused patents. Result: $2M upfront payment and estimated
$3M in royalties.
Managed
invention harvesting meetings with groups of engineers to generate
invention disclosures to fill strategic gaps in the patent portfolio.
Result: 5 to 10 new inventions in strategic areas from each meeting.
